I also attended his show in Fargo in 2009 but was taking college courses at the time and wasn’t able to blog it because I just didn’t have the time.
I won’t bore you with details about the trip to and from, we just took the scenic route instead of the interstate both ways. Stopped at DQ to eat and Dollar General. Got to motel about 3:00 and got an early check in. Had 2nd floor which was fine by us so I got online and caught up with everything I wanted to. So then around 3:30 I told Mom go ahead and order our pizza and I took off for the pool/hot tub room in just my swim suit & flip flops (with a towel wrapped around lower half). I got there to find that I needed one of our room keys to get in, oops. So I quickly returned, grabbed a key and enjoyed the hot tub for like 10 minutes to myself and got back and changed just in time to eat the pizza.
Around 5:15 we ventured out across the road to the XCel (you could see it from one of the 3 elevators, neat!) and waited to get in (thank goodness for indoor lobbies up here, brr). I think it was between 5:30 and 6 and we could hear sound check still going on. We were first in our little line so I quickly walked over to the merch, did my shopping and got outta the way. We roamed around a little and saw a bunch of Hooters girls taking pro pics with willing participants and saw a lot of other excited people. We went over and peeked down at the stage before going down and sure enough, stupid idiots at ticketmaster.com had the wrong stage and seating chart. He has the double t extension. When we got to the floor I made note of our Floor Right row 35 seats for Taylor in June by the mix on our way up to center floor row 16. We found it and sat down, my jaw dropped because we were actually 6 rows from the edge of the t stage! So THANK YOU KCOFC PRESALE for this amazing pair of seats!
So we just sat and said hi to the people next to us and they were happy with their seats as well (duh). I met Marie aka raebray from the KCOFC before the show but since the lights were going out for Uncle Kracker we had to wait until after the whole show to talk a little more and get a picture together. Thanks Marcie, nice to know I have some KC fan friends up around here!
Uncle Kracker was on for about half an hour. During his set Kenny was doing backstage meet & greets (I’m jealous). Kracker knew this and told us on the count of 3 we have to yell “Happy birthday Kenny” so he gave us the count and we all yelled it in perfect unison. I know KC heard us cuz he said so onstage!
Then there was only a 15 minute wait before Billy came on and played about an hour. Got some good pics of him. Only recognized a few songs.
I recognized Ed (Wannebo) when he came out on the stage before the curtain came down for Kenny. Since this was only the 4th show you could almost sense the new stage smell, ha! The curtain was down but when the lights were still up and showing from behind we could tell that Kenny was there onstage, he wouldn’t be popping up from the back and going over or through the crowd as in years past. This year is more about the music but it’s one hell of a show. They had a big clock on (his left) side of the stage. So since I saw the online paper that he hinted about playing until midnight I figured he really would. You can see the set list and know that it turned into a giant keg show but it was still a ton of fun! He apologized like 3 or 4 times for not coming our way for 4 years (other than We Fest and Fargo 2009) so I doubt he’ll wait that long ever again. We were willing to stay and party as long as he kept going. About 10:45 pm he looked at the clock and said “It is 1 hour and 15 minutes until my birthday!” and the whole place cheered. He did some rare stuff, it was awesome. Kracker and Billy joined him onstage as well as Tambo (better known from No Shoes Radio) to sing. Clayton sang 2 songs and hometown boy Nick finished off “You never even call me by my name”. It was a huge party to celebrate Nick’s homecoming and the start of Kenny’s birthday. Kenny told us twice he wished he could take us all with him on the rest of the tour, and I would totally love to do that sometime when I don’t have class stuff and a ton of other things going on.
The show did end at midnight. The last song was “Boys of Fall” and after signing some things Kenny announced “It is officially my birthday!” It was one hell of a night, in a great way. We crossed the road and were the last 2 on the elevator and since we were on 2 it was the first stop. We were just around the corner by a couple rooms so it took us no longer than 30 minutes to get off the floor, across the road, up the elevator and into our room. We knew we would’ve sat in traffic in ramps had we tried to drive home. Neither of us slept well (even with separate beds) because of some noise. I went to bed at 2:30 am (I went through all my show pics) and slept ’til 10 this morning. Then we dressed, gathered everything up & headed home. We were home around 2:30 this afternoon and I took care of unpacking and getting some things done so I could finish the set list and type this review. You are crazy if you miss out on seeing Kenny. Be happy if you have a ticket to go, he’s back! If possible I’d travel to at least 4 or 5 more shows of his and take him up on the roaming fan offer, ha! Wouldn’t that be the life, partying nearly every day and seeing him nearly every night!
The coolest thing today was getting home, getting NSR on and hearing myself from my earlier call in wishing Kenny a happy birthday! I’m so going to call again once I get more normal and thank him for an awesome night in MN and I wish I could go the rest of the tour with him.
